The Southeast Missouri Major Case Squad is investigating at Stevens' request, but he does not suspect foul play. He says he requested the investigation because of the number of people killed in the fire.

Stevens says the home was fully engulfed in flames by the time firefighters arrived, and it was impossible to rescue anyone.
