CAPE GIRARDEAU -- Four students from Cape Central High School have been named semifinalists in the National Merit Scholarship competition.

Earning the award are Daniel Hilty, Kenneth Cantrell, Jason Green and Joe Werne.

More than one million students entered the National Merit competition by taking the Scholastic Aptitude Test/National Merit Scholastic Qualifying Test as high school junior.

As semifinalists, these students must continue to meet high academic standards, submit SAT scores and be recommended by their high school principal.

About 14,000 semifinalists reached the finalist level in the 1991 competition. All merit scholarship winners will be chosen from the group of semifinalists. Scholarships range from $250 to $2,000.

Hilty is currently second vice president of National Honor Society, and a member of Scholar Bowl and Math Club. He has participated in Math Field Day and Chemistry Bowl competitions and has received several awards for his performance.

Hilty has been involved in other school organization and volunteers with the Boy Scouts. He is also involved in activities at Centenary United Methodist Church.

Cantrell is secretary of the Debate Team, is a member of the Scholar Bowl and belongs to the local chapter of the National Honor Society. He attended Boy's State and was a representative to Missouri's Freedom Forum. He has also been involved in Spanish Club, Vocational and Industrial Clubs of America, and has received a number of individual awards at the state level. He is also a member of the Lynnwood Baptist Church.

Green is a member of the Scholar Bowl and belongs to the local chapter of the National Honor Society. He is interested in debate and vocal music. Green is also active in the French Club, Red Dagger and has received a number of individual awards at the state level. He is active in Youth Ministries at Centenary United Methodist Church.

Werne is active in marching band, pep band and jazz band at Central High. In addition he has been active in National Honor Society, Red Dagger, Spanish Club and Natural Science Club.

This year he serves as captain of the newly-formed diving team. He is also active in Boy Scouts and does community volunteer work.
