An elderly woman was slumped over the wheel before the car she was driving on Broadway Tuesday afternoon slammed into the stopped vehicle in front of her, witnesses said.

The woman, who was not identified by police, later died of cardiac arrest at Southeast Missouri Hospital.

Traffic had stopped on the westbound lane of Broadway at about 12:50 p.m. as three cars waited for a vehicle to pull into the parking lot of Rhea Optical at 1105 Broadway.

That's when witnesses and police say the woman hit the car in front of her, causing the next two cars to hit the one in front of it. No other injuries were reported.
