BLYTHEVILLE, Ark. -- Two years ago, Trevor Edwards of Blytheville moved to Santee, Calif. Now Edwards, a 17-year-old junior at Santana High School, lies in the intensive care unit at Sharp Hospital in Santee after being shot by a gunman who opened fire on students at the school Monday.

As Edwards was leaving the school restroom, he was the first student shot, according to his mother, Tamara Edwards Lopolito of Blytheville.

He was shot in the back of the neck and fell to the floor immediately.

She said after Edwards was shot, the gunman turned around and shot another student in the face -- he died instantly. Edwards laid there witnessing the entire ordeal.

His doctor has told his family that he will remain in the intensive care unit, immobilized, for at least three more days. The bullet is lodged in his neck near the spinal cord and arteries, making it dangerous to operate, so the bullet will remain in his neck.

Edwards is also the son of David Edwards of Santee and the brother of Brandon Edwards, 19, of Louisville, Ky.

Before Edwards left for California at the end of his freshman year at East Junior High School, he was active in the Bambino and Junior Babe Ruth baseball programs and also played basketball.

"Prayers are needed for Trevor and all the students and their families that were involved in this tragedy," Lopolito said.
