RIO GRANDE, Puerto Rico -- Flooding caused by heavy rains killed two people and damaged hundreds of homes in eastern Puerto Rico, officials said Friday.

Rescue crews searched for a man swept away by a swollen river in the Juncos area as forecasters warned of more showers to come. More than 16 inches of rain fell on some areas.

At least 481 homes were damaged on the Caribbean island, a U.S. territory, and some 40 people were staying in government shelters. Another 62,000 homes were left without water service.

A 67-year-old man drowned Thursday after falling off his roof and plunging into the raging Fajardo River, while in eastern Humacao, crews rescued a 75-year-old man from a landslide but he died shortly afterward from his injuries.
