Five students from St. Vincent De Paul Grade School will compete at a national history event June 11 through 16 at the University of Maryland-College Park, just outside Washington.
Ten St. Vincent students won on the district level in Cape Girardeau and advanced to state competition in Columbia.
The five who won there included Chad and Gail Heuschhober, a brother and sister who competed in the group performance category. They portrayed Ralph Waldo Emerson and Margaret Fuller, an early feminist, discussing a woman's role in society.
Another brother and sister team, Patrick and Beth DesPres, competed in the group project category. Titled "Saving the Buffalo River," the project explained how a group of environmentalists helped to save the Buffalo River from being dammed up as proposed by the Army Corps of Engineers.
Trisha Brase competed in the individual project category and told the story of how sharecroppers in Southeast Missouri revolted against landowners in 1939.
