The 1000 block of North Sprigg Street was closed to traffic for about an hour starting around 3 p.m. Wednesday while the Cape Girardeau Fire Department responded to a fire at Heckler's Beer Barn and Grill, 1000 N. Sprigg St.

When firefighters arrived at the address they saw smoke coming from a door at the rear of the building, a media fact sheet distributed by the fire department stated. The fire originated in an electrical compressor under the rear stairs. The fire damaged the stairs, but other parts of the building had smoke damage. The fire was accidental, the fire department reported.

Heckler's was closed at the time of the fire, though two people who made it out safely were in an apartment above the business, Dillow said. Dillow said the fire was put out quickly. Firefighters finally left the scene around 4:30 p.m. There were no injuries, and Dillow characterized the damage from fire and smoke as light to moderate.
