A fire Wednesday that damaged a garage and a business nearby is suspicious because the building where it started had no electricity or gas, according to the Cape Girardeau fire marshal.
"That throws up red flags," said Brian Shaffer of the Cape Girardeau Fire Department.
Crews responded to the fire in a garage behind a day care facility at 1530 Independence St. at 10:20 p.m. Wednesday, according to a news release. Firefighters got the fire under control quickly, but a nearby business, Showcase Technologies, sustained smoke damage.
Shaffer said the police department collected some evidence and took pictures and that the fire remains under investigation.
The fire caused an estimated $25,000 worth of damage to the garage and $6,000 worth of smoke damage to the office.
