A Fruitland home was destroyed by fire Thursday despite the efforts of three local fire departments.

At about 12:45 p.m. the Fruitland fire department responded to a report of a fire that started in the kitchen of a home at 2311 County Road 436 near Fruitland. When firefighters arrived, the home was engulfed in flames, said fire chief Dean Riley.

About 18 firefighters with North County, Jackson and Fruitland fire departments worked throughout the afternoon to get the fire under control. Because of dry conditions, firefighters were still on the scene at 5 p.m. Thursday to make sure the fire didn't spread to nearby woods.
