CAIRO, Ill. -- Fire destroyed a Cairo furniture store early Friday morning. The cause of the fire is still being investigated.

Capt. Lynn Adams of the Cairo Fire Department said the department was called out at 1:08 a.m. Friday to the Hutson-Steinhouse store at 615 Commercial. The store was declared a total loss, the captain said.

Adams said the structure that housed the store was engulfed in flames when fire fighters arrived. He said the structure consisted of three buildings.

"It was totally involved when the fire department arrived," Adams said.

No one was in the store at the time of the fire and there were no injuries, he said.

Fire department from Mounds, Ill. and Mound City, Ill., also responded.

Adams said firefighters were able to bring the fire under control by about 5 a.m. Friday but remained on the scene throughout the day.

The cause of the fire is still being investigated by the state fire marshal's office, he said.
