No one was injured, but fire damaged a Cape Girardeau house Sunday afternoon.

Cape Girardeau firefighters have not identified what caused the fire at 2390 Cheetah Lane. Neighbors alerted firefighters about 4 p.m. about heavy smoke from the rear of the home.

According to a report Sunday night by Battalion Chief Mark Starnes, the home's lone occupant safely left the house before firefighters arrived because hard-wired smoke detectors alerted him to the fire.

"There's heavy fire and smoke damage to the house," Starnes said at the scene. "But no firefighters were injured, and no civilians were injured."

Firefighters were on the scene for about two hours, and firefighters from Jackson and Scott City assisted.

The report stated the home sustained about $75,000 in structural damage and $15,000 in damaged contents.
