CAIRO, Ill. -- Firefighters battled an early morning fire for nearly two hours at a home in the 500 block of 21st Street. Captain Brandon Manker of the Cairo Fire Department said firefighters were called to the scene around 6 a.m.
The fire started in the living room, Manker said, with the one-and-a-half story home receiving extensive smoke damage.
The owners were remodeling and only one member of the family was at home. Manker believes the fire started from a heater in the living room.
Members of the Cairo Auxiliary and Mounds, Ill., fire departments assisted the Cairo Fire Department.
