Firefighters quickly extinguished a fire they believe started as the result of an electrical short in the basement of an apartment building at 129 S. Frederick Wednesday.

Crews from three fire stations responded to the blaze that was called in at 6:38 p.m. Wednesday.

A spokesman for the Cape Girardeau Fire Department said the fire started in the basement area and spread to the first floor where it damaged the kitchen and bedroom areas of the main-floor apartment. The rest of the building suffered minor to moderate smoke damage, he said.

Firefighters said the flames were easy to get to and were quickly extinguished.

The apartment building is owned by Sam Raines. The tenant living in the main-floor apartment, who was home at the time of the blaze, is Clara Bell Lange.

No one was injured in the incident.
