An accidental fire caused by a cigarette dropped on a couch heavily damaged a Cape Girardeau apartment building early Monday, forcing tenants to evacuate.

The fire at 2:01 a.m. started in Apt. 5 in the building at 316 Independence St., near city hall.

The blaze caused $40,000 to $50,000 in fire, smoke and water damage to the building owned by Vera Windisch, fire department officials said.

No one was injured.
