Several students from the local area have been chosen as participants in the 2005 Missouri Fine Arts Academy.
The Fine Arts Academy is held every year on the campus of Southwest Missouri State University in Springfield, Mo., and is open to high school incoming juniors and seniors who show interest and achievement in artistic pursuits like music, art and theater.
Two students from Cape Girardeau Central High School, Carly Trautwein and Megan Ruth, will attend the academy this summer, as will Robin Phelps from Notre Dame Regional High School and Cara Mueller from Saxony Lutheran High School in Cape Girardeau.
Three students from Jackson High School have also been selected for the academy: Steven Nolkemper, Amanda Craven and Lauren Law.
Other area students selected include Sarah McDaniel and Martha Seibel from Perryville High School.
Only 200 students are selected each year from throughout the state to attend the academy, which lasts from June 5 to 25.
Students are nominated by their schools and then selected by the state Department of Elementary and Secondary Education to attend the academy.
During the three weeks, students will spend weekday mornings studying the arts in interdisciplinary formats and weekday afternoons studying their primary area of artistic ability. Students also attend concerts, arts lectures and other events outside of class time.
