BLOOMFIELD -- Presiding commissioner and township committeeman and committeewoman will be the only contested local races when Stoddard County voters go to the polls for the Aug. 4 primary election.

On the Democratic ticket, incumbent Norman Moore is running for re-election against three opponents who want his seat as Stoddard County presiding commissioner. The challengers are Pete Snider, Bob Blair and Jerry D. Moore.

Debby Agey and Jerry Elder are running for the job on the Republican side.

Only Democrats are running for the single township seats available. They are:

-- Jim Ryan, incumbent Don Harper and Luther Burns for committeeman of Castor Township.

-- Opal Lee Cookson and incumbent Marilyn Newsom for committeewoman of Duck Creek Township.

-- Shirley Crow Stephens and Karen E. Keasler for committeewoman of Elk Township. This seat has been vacant.

Incumbent County Clerk Don White is the only candidate for his job on the Democratic ticket. In the fall, he will face Sanford (Sandy) Smith, who also is unopposed for the Republicans.

Democratic Circuit Clerk Martha Ware also is running unopposed and will face no Republican challenger in the fall. The same is true for Recorder Kay Asbell and Prosecuting Attorney Briney Welborn.

Judge Joe Z. Satterfield, associated circuit court judge in division II, and Steve Mitchell, associate circuit court judge in division III, also are unopposed Democrats. They will encounter no Republican opposition in the November general election.
