FERGUSON, Mo. -- An area of Ferguson that has been the site of protests and riots is being eyed for an upgrade. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported the stretch of West Florissant Avenue was targeted for improvements long before protests began following the Aug. 9 shooting death of Michael Brown. Regional planners on Wednesday discussed possibilities for the 2.6-mile corridor from Interstate 270 to the Emerson Electric Co. headquarters, part of the Great Streets initiative. The project seeks to get communities to view major thoroughfares as more than a way to move vehicle traffic, with better aesthetics and better accommodations for bikes and pedestrians. A regional planner says the civil unrest has given jitters to potential investors.
