The federal government has allocated an additional $1 million for construction of a new Mississippi River bridge at Cape Girardeau.
Congresswoman Jo Ann Emerson, R-Mo., announced the fiscal 1997 funding Thursday.
The new bridge will be named in honor of her late husband, Bill Emerson, longtime 8th District congressman.
Earlier this year, the government allocated initial funding for construction of the bridge.
The bridge and connecting roads and rights of way will cost about $120 million. The states of Missouri and Illinois are paying part of the cost.
Construction work is under way on the project, which is expected to be completed by the year 2000.
