SAN DIEGO -- Authorities have discovered a tunnel running under the U.S.-Mexico border that apparently was used to smuggle drugs and illegal immigrants, the Drug Enforcement Administration announced Wednesday.

The tunnel was discovered in the mountains east of San Diego.

, known as a busy corridor for illegal immigration and drug smuggling. U.S. authorities blocked the tunnel Wednesday and were working with Mexican officials to do the same on their end.

The exact location of the tunnel was not immediately released. DEA Special Agent Steve Lough said it was fairly sophisticated but declined to give further details.

In 1993, agents discovered a tunnel 65 feet underground between Tijuana, Mexico, and San Diego that was lined with cement and equipped with electricity. Other tunnels have been found in Arizona.

HANNIBAL, Mo. -- Democrats from across the state are expected to gather in Hannibal this weekend for the northeast Missouri town's annual Democrat Days.

Considered the first major statewide Democratic event each year, Democrat Days traditionally draws top officials and candidates for major offices. Among those expected this year are Gov. Bob Holden, Lt. Gov. Joe Maxwell, Attorney General Jay Nixon, state Treasurer Nancy Farmer and state Auditor Claire McCaskill.

The event isn't limited to politicians. The St. Louis Cardinals, still trying to convince lawmakers to support plans for public funding to help build a new downtown ballpark, are hosting a hospitality room featuring their mascot, Fred Bird.

All events take place at the Hannibal Inn and Conference Center.

Farmer will be the speaker at a brunch program Saturday. A speaker for the Saturday night banquet has not been named, but past speakers have included Bill Clinton when he was running for president in 1992, presidential candidate Bill Bradley, Tipper Gore and Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill.
