Parents looking for an affordable good time for the entire family should plan to attend the Family Fun Fair in Arena Park.
The fair will be held April 13, from 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Entertainment and hands-on activities, including arts and crafts and booth games, will be available.
The event is 12 years old this year, but for 10 years was known as Sunday in the Park. It was founded by the Family Learning Center, which has since merged with the Community Counseling Center.
"We're continuing the tradition because this was a good thing for everyone," said Kim Swartz, executive director of the center's Foundation. "We are expecting as many as 600 kids and their families."
The theme of the day is "Family Fiesta." Swartz said volunteers are working to create a true fiesta atmosphere at the park, complete with good music, party favors and even tacos. Various performers will be featured throughout the day at the band shell, where Larry Reiminger from the Southeast Missouri Bank will serve as the master of ceremonies.
In addition, drawings depicting the theme will be on display at the A. C. Brase Arena Building throughout the day. Schools and preschools throughout the area were invited to participate in the contest, and winners in each category will be awarded savings bonds, toys or games. Three 100 cash prizes will also be awarded to the schools that submit winning entries, and winners will be featured on KBSI FOX 23's "Kid's Club."
"We're trying to encourage and provide an opportunity for families to participate with young children and have an affordable place to go," Swartz said. "This is not a fund-raising activity; it's an opportunity for families to interact."
