The Cape Girardeau County Family and Community Education Council met March 1 at the Extension Education Center in Jackson. Lee Anderson presided, and the devotion was given by Town and Country Club.
Dr. Frank Nickell, history professor at Southeast Missouri State University, presented the program on "Missourians are Plainly Funny People."
It was reported by Mary Gosche that 10 dolls were sent to Jefferson City for Child Advocacy Day, and she also announced that county members volunteered 17,764 hours in 2000.
Dortha Strack noted that forms are available to apply for a $600 scholarship that will be awarded to someone studying agriculture or home economics. Application deadline is April 1. For more information, contact the SEMO District Fair Board.
Upcoming events include All Clubs Day March 26, leaders training April 9, and spring district meeting April 24.
Mary Klaproth announced three tours planned this year: trip to the Muny July 24; Rockome Garden in Arcola, Ark., Sept. 29; and Pigeon Forge, Tenn., Nov. 9-11.
Agnes Wachter was nominated to chair a quilt project.
It was reported 211 entries were received in the fourth grade Literacy Essay Contest titled "What My Family Means to Me." Winners are: Taylor Sanders of Immaculate Conception School, first; Michael Graefe of St. Paul Lutheran School, second; and Josh Robert of St. Vincent de Paul School, third.
"I Can Do It" awards were won by: Nikki Woodale of Eagle Ridge Christian School, Jessica Major of Blanchard School, Lucian Johnson of Clippard School, Jessica Dunn of North Elementary in Jackson, Stephanie Morrison of Immaculate Conception, and Jared Mueller of Trinity Lutheran.
