Cancer specialists from St. Louis, Houston and Baltimore will be guest faculty at the Fall Cancer Symposium this weekend at the Show Me Center.
Guest faculty are Dr. Elisa Birnbaum of the surgery department at Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, Dr. Peter McLaughlin, associate professor of medicine at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, and Dr. James Wade, professor of medicine and oncology at the University of Maryland Medical System in Baltimore.
The symposium, sponsored by the Southeast Missouri Regional Cancer Center at Southeast Missouri Hospital, will be held Saturday and Sunday at the Show Me Center on Southeast Missouri State University campus.
Rectal and gastrointestinal cancers will be discussed at the symposium, designed for primary-care physicians.
The conference will feature formal presentations and case studies.
Co-sponsor of the symposium is the American Cancer Society. Accrediting sponsor is the Cape Girardeau Area Medical Society.
Cape Girardeau people serving as symposium faculty include Dr. Mark Hosler, pathology; Joseph P. Miller, radiation oncology; Walter Schroeder, otolaryngology; Dix Morgan, Southeast Hospice medical director; Celia Chan, hematology-oncology; and Benjamin Yuen, hematology-oncology.
Also on the faculty is Linda Wessell, enterostomal therapist at Southeast Missouri Hospital.
Cost of the symposium is $75, which includes all symposium educational activities, a detailed syllabus, continental breakfast and luncheon Saturday and a buffet breakfast Sunday.
