Fair organizers content despite lower turnout

The SEMO District Fair came to a close Saturday night with a fireworks display to commemorate the 150th year for the annual fair.

Approximately 85,500 people attended the 8-day long event this year.

"We were down about 12 percent from last year," said Pete Poe, fair board president. "But with the heat, the rain, with all the things going on in the world today, we were not disappointed at all."

Nearly all evidence of the fair was gone on Sunday, as carnival employees packed up all of the rides and the livestock were hauled off. Concession stands and other exhibits were put away till next year.

"We had 80 volunteers rained on today as we got most everything put up," Poe said.

This years musical line-up included performances by Randy Travis, Tracy Byrd and the Renegades of Southern Rock.

Poe said that all the concerts were well attended.

"We just appreciated everyone that came to the fair this year," he said. "We had a tremendous time and look forward to it again next year."

About 18,000 people attended the fair on Saturday, which was the final day.
