Area students awarded SEMO scholarships

Southeast Missouri State University recently awarded three scholarships to area students.

Jennifer Pottorf and Kira Pottorf of Jackson, and Samantha Slayton of Blodgett, Mo., all received General Education Degree Scholarships for the fall semester.

The scholarship is awarded to students who have completed the GED program with a score of 3000 or higher.

Jennifer Pottorf and Kira Pottorf are the daughters of Paul and Debra Pottorf of Jackson. Slayton is the daughter of Patrick Slayton of Blodgett.

Local students earn spots on honors lists

Rachel Stanley of Cape Girardeau was recently named to Northeastern University's dean's list for the spring 2003 semester.

Stanley is majoring in political science at the university, which is located in Boston, Mass.

Joseph Essner, son of Jim and Sharon Essner of Cape Girardeau, has been named to the spring 2003 semester dean's list at the University of Notre Dame in Indiana.

Essner, a 1999 graduate of Notre Dame Regional High School, is a senior mechanical engineering major.

Sara Little of Cape Girardeau has been named to the spring 2003 president's list at Truman State University in Kirksville, Mo.

Little is the daughter of Jim and Melba Little and is a senior psychology major.

Sikeston grad named to tennis All-Conference list

Stephen Pobst, a 2001 graduate of Sikeston High School, was among the members of the men's tennis team from the University of Missouri-St. Louis to be named to the Great Lakes Valley Conference Academic All-Conference list.

He is a sophomore majoring in anthropology. He is the son of Mike and Lisa Pobst of Sikeston, and is a member of the Cape Area Tennis Association and the Pierre LaClede Honors College at the university.

Ste. Genevieve Scout earns Eagle Scout award

Eric Horrell of Ste. Genevieve, Mo., recently earned his Eagle Scout Award.

Horrell is a member of Boy Scout Troop 404 and the son of Michael and Frances Horrell. He is the grandson of Celestine Horrell and the late Edward Horrell of Marble Hill, Mo., and the late Vernon and Anita Hinkebein of Chaffee, Mo.

Horrell will be a sophomore at Valle Catholic High School in Ste. Genevieve this fall.

Welter enrolls in computer program at ITT

Daniel Welter of Jackson has enrolled in the computing drafting and design program at ITT Technical Institute in Earth City, Mo.

He will begin an eight-quarter program in September, working toward an associate's degree.

Area students receive health care scholarships

The St. Francis Foundation and Auxiliary recently awarded 11 scholarships worth $1,000 each to local students pursuing health-care careers.

Cape Girardeau: C.J. Groshong, Dustin Mattison, Janet Smith, Gretchen Doris, Jason Garner.

Jackson: Blair Hinkebein, Dana Littlepage.

McClure, Ill.:Kelly Matlock.

Scott City: Carmon "Allen" Collier.

Frohna, Mo.: Tracy Haertling.

Sikeston, Mo.: Coleen Bates.

Wilkinson graduates with honors from Mizzou

Jennifer Kate Wilkinson, formerly of Jackson, recently graduated summa cum laude from the University of Missouri-Columbia with a master's degree in special education.

She is the daughter of Henry and Karen Wilkinson of Jackson, and will begin working as a special education teacher in Blue Springs South High School in Blue Springs, Mo., this month.
