Area students receive school honors
Jean Stoverink of Cape Girardeau, Katie Martin, Daniel Schumer and Michael Verseman of Perryville, Mo., were among 1,648 students to receive semester honors for the 2003 spring semester at Kansas State University in Manhattan, Kan.
Schumer and Laura Ponder, also of Perryville, received graduation honors as well.
Millham named to presidential scholars list
Lisa Millham, a freshman at Central Missouri State University from Jackson, was among nine student-athletes named to the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association Presidential Scholars list.
Millham plays basketball at the university.
Jackson graduate gets scholarship to Webster
Ashley Illers, a 2003 graduate of Jackson High School, was awarded a $10,000 scholarship to Webster University in St. Louis, where she has been accepted to the Leigh Gerdine College of Fine Arts.
Illers plans to pursue a degree in dance, and she is the daughter of Mack and Doris Illers of Jackson. She was named to Who's Who Among American High School Students, 2002-2003.
Raines named to York College dean's list
Erin Raines, a graduate of Scott City High School, has been named to the dean's list at York College of Pennsylvania for the spring 2003 semester.
She is the daughter of Mark and Teresa Raines of Scott City.
BioKyowa scholarship awarded to Van de Ven
Josh Van de Ven has been awarded the BioKyowa Scholarship to Southeast Missouri State University for the 2003-04 year.
He is a 2003 graduate of Leopold High School and plans to major in computer science.
Kelley, Morton named to SEMO dean's list
Jennifer Kelley and Crystal Morton of Cape Girardeau were named to the dean's list at Southeast Missouri State University for the spring 2003 semester.
Kelley is an environmental geology major and plans to graduate in May 2005.
Jackson student selected for youth honor choir
Megan Cooper of Jackson has been selected as a member of the 2003 Missouri Choral Directors Association youth honor choir.
The group, made up of 7th and 8th graders, will perform July 16 at the MCDA convention in Jefferson City.
This is the second year that Cooper has represented Nell Holcomb School District in the statewide group. She is the daughter of Cindy and Ray Petty of Jackson.
Local students named to institute's dean's list
Erik Kabo and Nicole Poythress of Cape Girardeau were named to the dean's list at Georgia Institute of Technology of the spring 2003 semester.
Steiner earns doctorate while serving in Navy
Navy Cmdr. Mark G. Steiner, son of Bernice Steiner of Jackson, Mo., recently earned his doctoral degree through off-duty studies while assigned at Chief of Naval Personnel Support Comples Navy Annex in Washington, D.C.
He is a 1975 graduate of St. Pauls High School in Concordia, Mo., and joined the Navy in 1988.
Peralta receives master's degree from seminary
Julie Schuessler Peralta recently received a master's degree in lay ministry from Trinity Lutheran Seminary in Columbus, Ohio.
Peralta is the daughter of Marty and Sharon Schuessler of Jackson. She is a 1989 graduate of Jackson High School and received a bachelor's degree from Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa in 1994. She resides in Indianapolis, Ind.
Kelly High grad named All-American Scholar
Dustin Martin, a 2003 graduate of Kelly High School, has been named an All-American Scholar.
Martin is the son of Don and Denise Martin, and the grandson of Alfred and Helen Martin, all of Charleston, Mo., and Ron and Pearl Gibson of Scott City.
Cape native graduates from New Jersey school
Elizabeth Maki, daughter of Allan Maki of Cape Girardeau, was among 131 students to graduate from The Peddie School in Hightstown, N.J.
Maki graduated with honors as a member of the Cum Laude society. She was awarded the English department prize for sophistication, clarity and vigor, and plans to attend Oberlin College next fall.
Area students graduate from McKendree College
Bethany Bailey of Cape Girardeau and Mindy Jameson of McClure, Ill., were among 544 students to graduate from McKendree College in Lebanon, Ill., in May.
Bailey received a bachelor's degree in nursing and Jameson received a bachelor's degree in elementary education.
