The University of Missouri Extension will offer a mental health first aid class next month in Jackson.

The eight-hour class will teach participants how to provide first aid to individuals going through mental health crises or showing signs they are in the early stages of a mental health disorder.

The training will include signs and symptoms of common mental health problems, where and when to get help and what type of help may be effective.

The class will address depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, eating disorders, substance abuse and self injury, along with crises such as suicidal behavior, acute stress after a recent trauma, panic attacks, psychotic behavior and drug overdoses.

The class will run from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Aug. 2 at the Cape Girardeau County University of Missouri Extension Center, 684 W. Jackson Trail in Jackson. The cost is $40, and participants must register by Friday.
