"Smarketing" the developing of tools to drive your business marketing plans into the year 2000, will be the theme of Business Expo '97, a two-day extravaganza to be held Sept. 19 and 20 at the Show Me Center.

The event, for businesses to showcase products and services, is sponsored by the Cape Girardeau Chamber of Commerce. Corporate sponsors are Craftsman Office Supply and Computers.

The Expo will be open from 3 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 19, and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 20.

The Expo is one of three major September events announced by the chamber at its "First Friday Coffee" last week.

The September happenings:

-- Satellite program, "Building Nimble Organizations for Turbulent Times," with Daryl Conner, author of "Managing at the Speed of Change," from noon to 2 on Sept. 16 at Dempster Hall Auditorium.

-- Business Expo '97, Show Me Center, Sept. 19 and 20.

-- NFIB Small Business Tour Barbecue, at 6 p.m. on Sept. 26 at the Show Me Center.

Second year for Expo

This year marks the second year for Business Expo. Business people can meet potential customers, create and expand mailing lists, conduct consumer surveys, introduce new products and services, visit with the competition and network with other businesses.

"This is a business enhancing Expo where chamber members exhibit their goods and services to other members as well as the general public," said Linda Minner, the chamber's special projects director.

A number of business have already agreed to exhibit products. More booths are available by contacting the chamber. Some 88 businesses had exhibits last year.

St. Louis entrepreneur Sam Silverstein, author of the book "The Success Model," will conduct a two-hour seminar entitled "Performance 2000," the first day of Expo, from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m.

Silverstein, president of Sam Silverstein Enterprise Co., will introduce "Smarketing." His appearance is sponsored by the Zimmer Radio Group.

Local hospitals will present a stress management program and a fitness seminar.

"Fitness in the Workplace," will be presented by Southeast Missouri Hospital at 9 a.m. Sept. 20, to be followed by a "Stress Management Seminar," by St. Francis Medical Center, at 10 a.m.

Some former St. Louis Baseball Cardinals will appear at 11 a.m. Saturday. Also scheduled, at 1 p.m., will be Steve Roberts a golf profession of the Bootheel Golf Club, who will present some golfing tips.

Chamber, NFIB barbecue

Jack Ferris, National Federation of Independent Business president, will conclude a weeklong small business celebration tour of Missouri on Sept. 26, at Cape Girardeau.

Ferris will appear at a barbecue sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce.

The barbecue will be from 6 to 10 p.m. at the Show Me Center.

Also appearing at the barbecue will be U.S. Sen. John Ashcroft and U.S. Rep. Jo Ann Emerson.

Satellite workshop

The chamber and the Harrison College of Business and Small Business Development Center will sponsor the "interactive" satellite workshop.

Darryl Conner, founder and CEO of ODR Inc., an Atlanta-based research and development firm, will present the satellite program from noon to 2. Conner is internationally recognized in the field of change management.

He will address how to change, rather than simply what to change. Topics include five steps to prosperity in turbulent times, which organizational culture is important to a change's success, how to assimilate change into your workplace, and how teamwork is important in achieving change objectives.
