A series of events celebrating the life of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. will begin this evening.
The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Citywide Celebration Committee will host a birthday celebration in honor of the late civil-rights activist at 7 p.m. at the Cape Girardeau Central Junior High School auditorium.
The 25th annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Community Celebration will begin at 6 p.m. Sunday at St. James AME Church, 516 North St.
The Salvation Army, 701 Good Hope St., will host a memorial breakfast in honor of King at 8 a.m. Monday.
A prayer service will begin at 11:30 a.m. Monday, followed by a humanitarian luncheon benefit at noon, both at the Salvation Army.
At 4 p.m. Monday, a youth gala will begin in the J.C. Penney court court at West Park Mall.
Instead of paying admission, attendees are asked to bring nonperishable food items, canned goods, toiletries or school supplies.
