Former Cape Girardeau County Republican chairman Evan Trump is the first person to announce his intention to run for Ward 3 representative for the Cape Girardeau City Council.
The seat has been vacant since the March 31 resignation of Trent Summers, who is moving out of the city.
Trump, a graduate of Southeast Missouri State University with a bachelor's degree in business administration, is the district manager for Bi-State Southern Convenience Stores. In a news release, he said he has 15 years of experience working in business development with business owners, senior management and government officials.
He's lived in Ward 3 more than six years with his wife and son and said he's running for the council position because he wants to give back to the community.
"I am excited about the opportunity to serve and represent the interests of my neighbors and friends in the city of Cape Girardeau and especially the residents of Ward 3," Trump said in a news release. "I believe that my experience in business, coupled with my commitment to serve, makes me the best candidate for this position."
The council hopeful said if elected, he would like to focus on issues such as continued road improvements, investing in the business park and working with the chamber of commerce to promote local businesses.
Trump is a member of the Cape Bible Chapel, where he has volunteered for leadership positions in programs and committees, according to the news release. It also said he's volunteered for Junior Achievement, Love in the Name of Christ, Parent Teacher Association, annual FBLA events and is a member of the National Rifle Association.
To qualify as an official candidate, Trump must gather signatures from 50 registered voters in Ward 3 and have them certified by the city clerk. If two or fewer candidates apply for the position, the winner will be selected by vote in a November general election. An August primary will be required if three or more candidates apply.
