DEXTER - Terry J. Ernst, staff writer and photographer for the Daily Statesman in Dexter, has filed as a Republican candidate for the 159th district. The district covers most of Stoddard County and the northwest portion of Scott County, including the cities of Chaffee, Oran and Morley.

"I've really been preparing for this position for many years," Ernst said. "As a working journalist for almost eight years, I've seen government from all angles - county commissions, city councils, school boards and the state and federal level. That kind of valuable experience will allow ~~me to be a state representative knowledgeable of area issues."

Ernst, 41, has been with the Daily Statesman since October 1987, working in general news. Previously, he was news editor of the Chaffee Signal for 16 months. He began his career in 1984 at the the Communi~ty Press/Regional Farmer in his hometown of Perryville.

"I've lived and worked throughout the new legislative district," Ernst said. "I know the people in the district and have talked with many of them about their problems and goals. I understand what it takes to make this area a good place to live and work."

Ernst said he has always tried to print both sides of the story on any issue. He said he believes that good decisions result from the public knowing everything that is possible about their local, state and federal governments.

Ernst said he will bring his fairness as a journalist to the state representative's position. His background and knowledge of the area should give him an edge in making decisions for the public good, he said.

Ernst served on the Perryville Board of Education from 1985 to 1988.

"The school board experience was really helpful because it acquainted me with some of the problems faced by educators and their local leaders," Ernst said. "I learned about hiring good people, providing an outstanding curriculum, maintaining buildings, school financing and how to read a budget. That has helped me considerably through the years as a reporter."

Ernst said he chose the Republican party for his first partisan election because of his family background, deliberate nature and conservative view on government.

Ernst resides in Oran with his fiancee, Helena Steimle, and her two teenage sons. He has been involved in school and community events through her sons' activities.

Ernst is a 1972 graduate of Southeast Missouri State University with a B.S. degree in business administration. He was raised on a farm near Biehle in Perry County.

He is challenging Democratic incumbent Rep. Marilyn Williams, of Dudley.
