The East Missouri Action Agency recently received a $25,000 grant from AmerenUE for weatherization services for their natural gas customers in Cape Girardeau and Marble Hill, Mo. Low-income families may take advantage of the program, with the elderly and disabled getting preference. Services include insulation and repair of unsafe heating systems.

Central grad prepares for law career

KANSAS CITY -- Dennis Bowden, 54, of Kansas City graduated with distinction from the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Law in May.

He graduated Central High School in 1966 and Southeast Missouri State University in 1970, gaining a bachelor's degree in business administration. While on active duty with the United States Air Force, he received a master's degree from Webster University through an extension program in San Antonio, Texas.

Hosiery mill reunion set in Jackson

JACKSON, Mo. -- The 16th annual Jackson Hosiery Mill reunion will be from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 24 at Delmonico's restaurant in Jackson.

Friedrich descendants plan gathering

JACKSON, Mo. -- The descendants of Jacob and Marguerita Friedrich will hold their annual family reunion at noon Aug. 18 in the Emanual United Church of Christ Fellowship Hall in Jackson. Each family is asked to bring a basket lunch and table service.

Eastern Star will serve dinner

St, Mark's Eastern Star 167 will hold its annual past matron and past patron dinner from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Sunday at the Masonic Lodge.

An adult meal will be $6, children 6 to 12 years old can eat for $3, and children up to 6 years old eat free.

Benefit set for boy with leukemia

LEOPOLD, Mo. -- A benefit for Curtis Wolpers, 3, who has leukemia, will be conducted from 4 to 7 p.m. Aug. 31 at the K.C. Hall in Leopold. He is the son of Scott and Cindy Wolpers.

There will be kettle beef, chicken and dumplings, fried chicken, dressing and all the trimmings. The Southern Fire band will perform from 8 p.m. to midnight, and an auction and quilt raffle will begin at 9 p.m. Twenty-pound hams will be sold for $35, and there will be bake sale.

Chapman family reunion set for county park

Relatives, descendants and friends of John and Lucy Bowman, Gideon and Elizabeth "Betty" Ford Chapman, Gideon and Martha "Viola" Wiggins Chapman, Gideon and Sarah Adaline "Addie" Wingate Chapman, Thomas Simpson, Mary Elizabeth Adkins Reed and Thomas and Elizabeth Slaymaker Reed are invited by the relatives of George Edward and Mella Clorence Reed Chapman to meeting at Shelter 22 in the South Cape County Park on Sept. 1.

Women receive special recognition

SIKESTON, Mo. -- Nila Wright, Sherry Reynolds and Candy Oliphant were given special recognition along with all nominees from Missouri Health Care District 5 for employee of the year, volunteer of the year, administrator of the year and essay entrants.

A luncheon was given for them recently in Sikeston.

Wright won volunteer of the year, Reynolds was recognized as an employee of the year nominee and Oliphant, who was not present, was given a certificate of appreciation.

The three work out of Heartland Care and Rehab in Cape Girardeau.
