CAIRO, Ill. -- New mayors were elected Tuesday in the Alexander County communities of Tamms and Thebes.
Carol L. Mitchell won the battle of new candidates at Tamms, defeating Steven W. Dixon, 169 to 70. Walter Pang, who has served as Tamms mayor a dozen years, did not run for re-election.
Ann Pace led the five-person field for three four-year Tamms trustee positions, with 205 votes. Also winning posts were Charles F. Hood with 153 votes and Lester Pickett with 145.
Other candidates receiving votes for the position were Linda J. Long with 111 and August "Gus" Tribout with 102.
James L. Sutton is the new mayor of Thebes.
Sutton collected more than half of the 117 votes cast for mayor, with 73, to defeat Michael Kennedy, with 23 votes, and Ronnie Hall, 21 votes.
In another contested race at Thebes, Paul Wareing led a five-person race for three four-year trustee positions, with 67 votes. Also elected to four-year spots were Bruce Clubb with 61 votes and Clifford Adams with 58.
Other candidates receiving votes were Jeff Petzoldt, with 52, and Brian Scott Lesar, with 47.
Mary Petzoldt received 50 votes to fill an unexpired trustee term. She was the only candidate.
Sheila Dodson was re-elected village clerk, running unopposed.
