Mr. S, widowed and living alone, recently learned that he has cancer. He also is recovering from surgery.

Mr. S, 78, has no way to tell friends and relatives when he is unable to leave his home because he doesn't have a telephone. All of his children live outside the Cape Girardeau area.

Perhaps Christmas for the Elderly, a joint project of the Cape Girardeau County Health Department and Southeast Missourian, will provide Mr. S with the funds to get a telephone installed in his small home.

Mr. S is a diabetic and must use his Social Security income to pay for insulin and an array of medical bills.

Items on his Christmas for the Elderly wish list: a gift certificate to a grocery store, a fruit basket, warm clothes in size small and a sweat suit.

Like many underprivileged senior citizens, Mr. S. could use items he must do without due to the strict budget he lives on. Those include paper products such as toilet paper, towels and bath soap.

Gifts for the project may be delivered to the Southeast Missourian, 301 Broadway, or the Cape Girardeau County Health Department, 1121 Linden.

Gifts or monetary donations may be mailed to Christmas for the Elderly, P.O. Box 699, Cape Girardeau, Mo. 63702-0699.
