EAST PRAIRIE -- Voters overwhelmingly approved the East Prairie City water works-sewer bonds proposal Tuesday.
The bond issue, which required only a simple majority, received 219 votes in favor of the proposal with only 24 votes opposing. Officials described the turnout as low for the special election.
The city sought passage of the $3 million revenue bond issue to fund the replacement of the city's 30-year-old water treatment plant and improvements to the community's sewage system. Also the bond's passage will fund two new 600 gallon per minute water wells, a new water storage tank and repairs to a lift station.
The bond will be repaid by revenue generated from the users of the system.
