MOUND CITY, Ill. -- Patrick Duffy of Cobden and Ward Walshon of Grand Chain will square off in the race this fall for state's attorney of Pulaski County.
Duffy defeated Loren Waite of Mounds by a vote of 510-378 to win the Democratic nomination. In a close Republican primary, Walshon defeated James Flummer by a vote of 643-564.
In Pulaski County's only other contested race, Ned J. Gunn of Mounds won the Republican primary, defeating B.J. "Benny" Britton Jr. of Villa Ridge, 701-451 for county commissioner. Gunn will face Democrat Sam Johnson of Mound City in the fall general election. Johnson beat Eddie Helton of Mounds, 577-225 in the Democratic primary.
In Alexander County, incumbent County Commissioner Rollie "Mit" Matlock of McClure defeated two other Democrats for the nomination and an uncontested candidacy in the fall. No Republicans filed for the position.
Matlock received 987 votes to William "Witz" Colyer's 276 and Larry "Pete" McHughs' 268.
Voters also approved by a vote of 781 to 548 a ballot measure pertaining to establishment of a college savings program to allow families to set aside money for their children's education at an Illinois public university.
Local results for Union County elections weren't available at press time Tuesday night.
