MARBLE HILL -- A Marble Hill icon will soon be closing its doors.
After 104 years of continuous service to the community, Chandler Drug Store is going out of business.
The business has been owned and operated by four generations of the Chandler family, starting with Dr. John J. Chandler in 1896. He bought the original building, which is still being utilized, from A.R. Jaques of Massachusetts.
When Dr. John J. Chandler died in 1942, his wife and children took over the business. In 1946, one of Dr. Chandler's sons, Seamon "Seam" Chandler and Seam's son Lynn co-bought the business.
In 1956, Seam's son John Dale Chandler took his place. Seam Chandler died in 1962 and his wife Mildred then went to pharmacy school, which she finished in 1965.
The store is currently operated by Steve and John Dale Chandler.
