After 18 years of helping the Area Wide United Way raise money for community service agencies, Dorothy Klein will retire.

She will work through the current campaign and retire Dec. 31.

The Area Wide United Way annually conducts a fund drive to help service agencies in Cape Girardeau, Jackson and Scott City.

Klein started working with the Area Wide United Way in 1977 and has been the executive director since 1980. In 1977, the fund-raising goal was $154,900. This year's goal is $500,000.

In 1977, Klein was a volunteer for the United Way and the organization was looking for a part-time secretary.

"I was hired by the late Hugh Logan, who was the campaign director at that time," she said.

Klein remembers when the United Way was in operation just three months during the year. "I did bookkeeping and secretarial work from my home," she said.

Today the United Way owns its own building and is operational year-round.

"Dorothy has submitted her retirement notice now so a search for a new director can begin," said Richard Gross, president of the United Way Board of directors.

"I've just reached retirement age," Klein said. Her husband retired in May.

The Board of Directors has formed a search committee for a new executive director. Resumes can be sent to: Richard Gross, P.O. Box 562, Cape Girardeau, Mo. 63702.
