JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. -- Campaign contributions to candidates for the 157th District seat in the House of Representatives had neared the $100,000 mark with less than two weeks to go before Election Day.
Through July 25, the four Republicans and one Democrat vying for the seat had collected nearly $96,000 combined from donors. Counting loans some candidates made to their campaigns, total receipts for the candidates had topped $107,000.
Far more money had been given to 157th District candidates than to those vying for any other House seat in Southeast Missouri.
Almost 85 percent of the money from contributors, excluding loans, went to Republicans. Donna Lichtenegger of Jackson, Mo., a long-time party activist, has raised the most money throughout the campaign, $38,763.24.
However, from July 1 through July 25, the period covered by the most recent campaign disclosure report submitted Monday to the Missouri Ethics Commission, Scott Lipke of Jackson, an assistant Cape Girardeau County prosecutor, brought in the most cash, $3,760. That total included nine donations for the $300 limit for a House race. He spent $4,807.79 and had $8,978.94 on hand.
Lichtenegger raised $2,235 during the latest reporting cycle, with four maximum donations. After spending $12,498.61, she had $10,912.26 in the bank.
Cape Girardeau County Farm Bureau president Tom Sachse of Friedheim, Mo., collected just $120 and, after spending $2,486.66, had $3,065.22 remaining.
Gerald Adams, a member of the Jackson school board, raised $425, spent $116 and was left with $1,365.90.
Meanwhile, Democrat Chuck Miller of Oriole, Mo., continued to build a formidable war chest in preparation for his campaign against the Republican nominee. Miller, unopposed in Tuesday's primary election, raised $4,152, spent $3,594.41 and had $13,839.47 in the bank.
Four donors, all special interest groups, gave Miller the limit. His most notable contributor was State Treasurer Nancy Farmer, who gave $200. Miller's son, also named Chuck Miller, is Farmer's chief of staff.
Libertarian Timothy Doubledee of Jackson, who will face Miller and the Republican winner on Nov. 5, filed a statement that he intended to neither raise nor spend more than $500.
The newly redrawn 157th District represents parts of Cape Girardeau and Perry counties. Incumbent state Rep. David Schwab, R-Jackson, is leaving the House due to term limits.
