BENTON, Mo. -- A domestic dispute involving an infant led to the arrest of the child's mother on drug charges Friday morning.

Michelle Marshall, 18, of Sikeston, Missouri, is charged with felony possession of a controlled substance.

Marshall was arrested after Scott County detective Staff Sgt. Branden Caid responded to a report of screams coming from a parked car on Missouri Street in Benton.

"Caid learned that the driver of the vehicle became agitated at his 1-year-old daughter, claiming she was getting on his nerves," according to a news release from Scott County Sheriff Rick Walter. "It was reported the father yelled at the child to shut up and squeezed the child against his chest, causing Marshall, the child's mother, to become concerned for the child's safety."

Marshall then began to scream at the father to stop and attempted to pull the baby away from him, the sheriff reported.

During the detective's investigation, he found Marshall to be in possession of a controlled substance.

The officer placed both under arrest. The Missouri Children's Division and the Scott County Juvenile Office were notified and took the child into protective custody.
