The sixth annual Doctors vs. Lawyers Softball Game, a fund raiser for United Way, will be held Saturday at Capaha Field.
The game will be preceded by a silent auction of St. Louis Cardinals memorabilia. The auction will be held at the pre-game party at Celebrations, 615 Bellevue, which begins at 5 p.m.
Items to be auctioned include a "Seasons of Dreams" bat commemorating Mark McGwire's 1998 season, McGwire's "70" home run cap, a McGwire stadium collection cap, an autographed "Red Schoendinst Day" photo and career history information poster, five sets of Ameritech collectible pins and a replica of McGwire's jersey with "70" embroidered on the sleeve.
A minimum bid will be placed on each item, and the highest bidders will be announced at the end of the sixth inning of the game.
The seven-inning game will begin at 7:30 p.m. Prizes, including a grand prize of two Cardinal baseball tickets and a one-night stay at the Drury Inn in St. Louis, will be given away throughout the game. In addition, games and activities for children will be held at both the party and the game.
Tickets for the pre-game party cost $25 for adults, with children under 12 admitted free. Game tickets cost $5 for adults, $2.50 for children ages 6 to 11 and free for children 5 and younger. Tickets can be purchased in advance at the United Way office, 1858 Broadway, or at the door.
Proceeds from the event will go to the 1999 United Way "Make Someone Happy" campaign, which will support 25 agencies in Cape Girardeau, Jackson and Scott City.
