Dispute between Missouri, Kansas could cause taxpayers to amend returns

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) -- Next Tuesday's tax deadline may not be the end of the paperwork for thousands of Missouri workers who live elsewhere.

Last year, Missouri lawmakers halted a tax break that had allowed nonresidents to deduct their out-of-state property taxes from their Missouri income taxes. The change outraged Kansas officials, because it meant more income taxes for Missouri and less for its neighboring states.

To pacify Kansans, Missouri lawmakers pledged to repeal last year's laws. But they have waited so long to act that many people already have filed their tax returns.

If Missouri lawmakers eventually do repeal the law, nonresidents who work here would have to file amended tax returns, if they want their tax money redirected to their home states.
