Cape Girardeau Fire Department and Department of Natural Resources crews tackled a small diesel leak at Saint Francis Medical Center just before noon Wednesday.

"A generator fuel tank was being repaired, and it overflowed," Saint Francis spokeswoman Emily Blattel said. She said it was not known why it had happened, but 22 1/2 gallons were spilled.

"They quickly contained the spilled fuel. ... And it never got off our property," Blattel said.

Saint Francis' sewer system is self-contained, but responders were concerned it would overflow if it rained. The system's overflow tank drains into the city's sewer system.

Blattel said she expected the spill would be cleaned up by Wednesday evening.
