According to Pulley, his investigation revealed that Gross was using a home computer and scanner to generate the counterfeit bills that he attempted to pass as cash in the area.

The investigation by Pulley and the Dexter Police Department began several days ago when counterfeit bills first appeared at the One Mile Road branch of First Midwest Bank. More phony bills surfaced at several local business establishments including McDonald's, Casey's General Store, Town and Country Supermarket and Wal-Mart. Establishments in the Essex area also accepted suspicious bills that later proved to be counterfeit as well.

Police say that the investigation into several of those instances are still under investigation.
