Voters in Delta on Tuesday authorized a bond issue that will allow for $1 million in sewer and water improvements.

Cape Girardeau County Clerk Kara Clark Summers said the issue passed with an unofficial total of 38 "yes" votes to 23 "no" votes. The 61 voters who turned out were a small portion of the 296 people eligible to vote in the special election.

The bonds, along with operation and maintenance for the sewer and water systems, will be paid for by revenue from water and sewer bills.

In April, Delta voters did not approve a $1.5 million bond issue that would have combined and improved the city's waterworks and sewage systems. City officials have said upgrades have been needed for some time and that neither system had been improved in 40 years.

Delta's water system operates on one supply well, while the sewer treatment system puts out a higher ammonia discharge than what is allowed by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, officials told the Southeast Missourian earlier this year.

Rates for sewer and water in Delta may increase as a result of the bond issue.
