Local civic organizations and residents have until Monday to nominate individuals for the Southeast Missourian's annual Spirit of America Award.

The award will recognize a person who most embodies American values such as patriotism, loyalty, generosity, entrepreneurship and other such qualities.

People in Cape Girardeau, Perry, Bollinger, Stoddard and Scott counties in Missouri and Union, Pulaski and Alexander counties in Illinois are invited to submit nominations.

The recipient will be recognized July 4, and the organization that nominated the winner will receive a $1,000 cash prize for its activities.

Past winners are John "Doc" Yallaly, Dr. Dan Cotner, Melvin Gateley, Neal Edwards, James Harnes Sr., Jane Randol Jackson and Harry Rediger.
