The Missouri Land Reclamation Commission on Thursday granted a request for a hearing on a proposed quarry expansion by Strack Excavating near the Dalhousie subdivision in Cape Girardeau.
Strack is asking the commission for permission to expand the existing 10-acre quarry's east boundary by four acres.
The company also has plans for a new surface mining operation on 50 acres it recently purchased along County Road 601 in Fruitland.
Homeowner Aaron Dombrowski and lawyer John Schneider attended the commission's meeting today in Jefferson City, representing more than 30 residents who signed a petition opposing Strack's expansion plans.
"We successfully protected the safety of private citizens of Cape Girardeau today," said Schneider of the Johnson and Schneider law firm, which is representing the Dalhousie homeowners.
The hearing was granted due to air pollution and dust concerns, Schneider said.
Strack Excavating has the option of withdrawing its application, but must notify the commission of its intentions before the commission's next meeting Nov. 18, said Judd Slivka, communications director at the Missouri Department of Natural Resources.
A hearing likely won't take place until next year, Slivka said.
