Customers at the Cape Girardeau Schnucks store weren't letting news of a massive security breach interfere with their grocery shopping Monday evening.
The company reported Monday that the breach may have compromised up to 2.4 million customers' credit and debit card information at 79 stores, including the one in Cape Girardeau, 19 S. Kingshighway.
Virginia Diamond of Cape Girardeau said she wasn't worried.
"I have used credit cards and debit cards here, but I didn't get too excited about it," she said as a steady stream of customers pulled in and out of the store's parking lot. "I don't think it hurt business, looking at the cars."
Diamond said she had heard a news report about the fraud earlier Monday but had no qualms about using her debit card to buy groceries that evening.
"You know, people -- that's all they use is their debit card," she said. "They don't use cash like they used to."
DeAnna Gould and Jordan Carver of Cape Girardeau said the breach hadn't affected them.
Gould said she keeps a close eye on her bank account.
"I always look over our statements and make sure all the transactions are ones we did, and didn't get overcharged for anything," she said.
Marge Smith of Cape Girardeau said she usually uses her debit card at Schnucks. After learning about the breach, she said she planned to check with her bank to make sure her account had not been compromised.
"I've never been one to just take chances," she said. "I'll call the bank tomorrow, first thing."
