JACKSON -- Sales tax figures for Cape Girardeau County in 1995 were up a generous 9.2 percent over 1994, County Auditor H. Weldon Macke reported.
The figures have been up between 4 and 10 percent each year since 1990. The only exception was 1991, when a recession resulted in less than a 1 percent increase in sales tax over the previous year.
The county collected $4.1 million in sales taxes last year compared to $3.8 the previous year.
Macke said news analysts predict a national sales slump in 1996, but it may not affect local business.
"They say it will be a terrible year, but I don't think it will be around here," he said. "We will know better when we get the March check."
