JACKSON -- Cape Girardeau County received its biggest sales tax check ever this month, County Auditor H. Weldon Macke told the county commission Thursday.
The amount was $533,087.28, 8 percent more than last June. In addition, county sales tax figures for the year are running 8.5 percent more than last year, which was the county's biggest ever.
Macke said he wasn't sure of the cause, adding that the county would have been better served if the check was received later.
The first six sales tax checks are used to determine the county property tax levy, which is set lower in years when sales tax revenue is high.
