No specific dollar amounts were outlined, but the Humane Society hopes that the county will pay at least half of what the organization spends on animals that are collected for free from county residents.

More than 600 animals from outside the city limits of Cape Girardeau and Jackson were brought to the shelter last year and 88 by the county's animal control officer.

Presiding Commissioner Gerald Jones suggested that the Humane Society send the proposed contract to county auditor David Ludwig to see if it would fit into next year's budget.
